Old copper and steel water pipe entering a concrete wall

Galvanized and old water line replacement

Galvanized steel was the standard yard line for decades. It rusts from the inside out, which is why so many older Alabama homes face repeated leaks and fading pressure.

In short

Replacing an old galvanized steel or unknown-material service line with modern pipe from the meter to the house.

Why galvanized lines fail

Galvanized pipe is steel coated with zinc. Over decades the coating wears through, rust builds up inside, the opening narrows and the wall thins. The result is lower pressure, discolored water and, eventually, leaks at threads and thin spots, often more than one.

Where Alabama has the most

Every Alabama water system reported its service line materials to the state. Some stand out for galvanized lines needing replacement:

  • Gadsden: 12,496 of about 15,600
  • Decatur: 8,882 of about 28,000
  • Florence: 3,882, plus more than 17,500 unknown
  • Wetumpka: 591 of about 3,900
  • Jasper: 580, plus more than 5,000 unknown

How to check your line

  1. Find the pipe where it enters the house or rises out of the ground.
  2. Try a magnet. It sticks to galvanized steel, not to copper, plastic or lead.
  3. Look at the joints. Galvanized pipe is threaded.
  4. Ask your utility what its inventory lists for your address.

Alabama banned lead in plumbing on January 4, 1989. Older homes can still have lead or galvanized pipe somewhere in the line.

Common questions

Can a galvanized line just be patched?

It can, but leaks usually return nearby. Replacement is usually better value.

Will my utility replace my side?

Some utilities have replacement plans. Ask before paying for a full replacement.
